Firefighters worried about high winds kicking up today.

9:35am UPDATE: A brush fire that broke out just before 9 this morning on the west side of Interstate 25 near the Tramway exit has southbound traffic on I-25 down to one lane, according to 770 KKOB Radio.

Firefighters from the town of Bernalillo and from Bernalillo County are on scene trying to bring the fire under control, KKOB said.

9:05am UPDATE: A new brush fire has broken out along southbound Interstate 25 near the Tramway exit, 770 KKOB Radio is reporting.

A fire that broke out around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the bosque area of Tome and Los Chavez in Valencia County burned about 60 acres and jumped the Rio Grande, and is reported to be about 20 to 30 percent contained this morning, KOAT-TV is reporting.

The fire that sent flames shooting 20-30 feet in the air began on the west side of the river had jumped the river and ignited trees and brush on the east side of the Rio Grande around midnight, KOAT-TV said.

There are homes in the area, but firefighters told Action 7 News that none had been threatened so far and no evacuations were ordered.

But fire crews are closely watching the fire for flareups this morning because of the threat of high winds kicking up today, KOAT-TV reported.

A red flag warning is in effect for a broad swath of central New Mexico and the Interstate 25 corridor up to Raton from 11 this morning to 7 p.m. when high winds combined with low relative humidities will mean critical fire weather conditions during the heat of the day, according to the National Weather Service.

In the fire area of Valencia County, high temperatures are supposed to reach 76 or 77 degrees, with winds turning west to between 10 and 20 mph, gusting at times to 30 mph, the weather service predicted.
