Ex-Deming resident charged with forging $145,000 in checks from Baca's Funeral Chapels.
Erik De Los Reyes, 22, a former Deming resident who now lives in Las Cruces, has been arrested by New Mexico State Police on 45 counts of forgery involving some $145,000 worth of checks, the Deming Headlight reported. De Los Reyes was being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on $250,000 bond, charged with 27 third-degree forgery counts and 18 fourth-degree counts for allegedly cashing checks from Baca's Funeral Chapels over the past two years, the Headlight said. Agent Charles Boylston of the State Police criminal division in Las Cruces is investigating the case because the checks were deposited in a Las Cruces bank, the paper reported. Investigators are still looking at bank records, Boylston told the Headlight. "What (De Los Reyes) stated to me is that he would go to see Mr. (Sam) Baca and grab a couple of checks and write them to Gold Dust Studios and his name and deposit them into his account. That much we are able to verify at this time," Boylston told the Headlight. "He stated to me it was solely him. He didn't want any of his friends or family to know," Boylston said of De Los Reyes. "At this time, we haven't uncovered a second person." De Los Reyes had been employed by Baca's Funeral Chapels, which have businesses in Las Cruces and Deming, for several years, helping with office duties, according to the Headlight.
