Illegal immigrant found guilty of assault in Santa Fe nabbed near Sunland Park.

Border Patrol agents early Tuesday morning detained a 33-year-old man trying to illegally enter the United States near Sunland Park and found he has an extensive criminal history in the United States, according to the El Paso Times.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was convicted in Santa Fe of five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Times.

According to El Paso television station KFOX, the man entered the so-called zero-tolerance zone known as "Operation Lockdown" shortly after midnight Tuesday morning.

The man was turned over to authorities in Otero County to await deportation, according to the El Paso Times.
