23-year-old accused of armed robbery of two Allsup's stores early Thursday.

Santos Rodriguez, 22, of Lubbock was found hiding in the attic of a Portales apartment complex on Thursday following two early-morning robberies of Allsup's Convenience Stores, the Portales News-Tribune reported.

One of the stores was held up at knifepoint at 2:50 a.m. Thursday, where the male suspect demanded cash and took some cigarettes, according to a Portales Police Department news release.

The second store was robbed at 4:50 a.m. by a person matching the description of the suspect in the first holdup, in which the suspect allegedly also brandished a knife, demanded money from the clerk and took milk coupons from the cash register, the News-Tribune reported.

Officers found a vehicle that matched the description given by one of the store clerks in the parking lot of a Portales apartment complex, where residents told police they saw a person matching the suspect's description entering the apartments, the News-Tribune said.

Rodriguez is being held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond, facing two counts of armed robbery, the paper reported.

"This is the first armed robbery of the year in Portales," police Capt. Lonnie Berry said. "There were about five armed robberies last year in Portales."

There are five Allsup's stores in Portales, which are open year-round, 24 hours a day, the News-Tribune said.
