Person originally reported missing found with gunshot wound to her head.

Dona Ana County sheriff's investigators, as of an hour ago, were still on the scene in the Picacho Hills neighborhood on Las Cruces' west side awaiting search warrants in the case of an elderly woman who was first reported missing by her husband, then found dead, the Las Cruces Sun-News is reporting.

A resident of the home on the 100 block of Villa Chiquita told deputies this morning that his wife was missing, but when officers checked the home they found a woman with a fatal gunshot wound to the head, according to the sheriff's department news release.

Neighbors described the couple as being in their 80s and very friendly, and both had been seen walking around the neighborhood around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the Sun-News said.

The names of the woman and her husband haven't been released.

Sheriff's investigator Richard Chavez said no one is in custody at this time, but there is one "person of interest," the paper reported.
