Snow on the ground in Santa Fe for the Vernal Equinox.

8:40am UPDATE: Ruidoso and Mescalero Apache schools will be closed for the day, according to the latest from KOAT-TV. Another Lincoln County school district, Capitan, remains on a two-hour delay at last report. And KOB-TV is reporting that schools in the Questa Independent district will close today.

The winter weather advisory has been lifted for the Albuquerque area on this first day of spring -- officially here at 11:26 a.m. today -- but remains in effect for the East Mountains, Santa Fe and points north and eastward until 11 a.m.

Much of the nation's midsection will get a last blast of winter, and Denver could get as much as 10 inches of snow today.

In New Mexico, the foggy, wet and snowy weather is expected in the northeastern counties, and a wind advisory is in effect until 6 this afternoon for the east and southeast, with gusts from 45 mph all the way up to 60 mph.

But spring -- the Vernal Equinox -- has little to do with whether it snows or not. It simply means that day and night are of equal length. But we can dream, can't we?

Just two school districts are reporting two-hour delays at this hour: Jemez Mountain Schools and Questa, KOB-TV is reporting. And KOAT-TV is adding three school districtss from Lincoln County on a two-hour delay: Ruidoso, Mescalero Apache and Capitan.
