Las Cruces man points gun at Grants police officer who was fired on by Kansas escapees.
What is there about Grants Police Officer Jesse Nieto? Last October, Nieto and Grants Police Sgt. Jason Fank came under fire by Kansas prison escapee Steven A. Ford, 26, while they were arresting fellow escapee, 33-year-old Jesse L. Bell, at a Grants apartment complex, the Cibola County Beacon reported. Then last week, the Beacon reported, Nieto stopped a vehicle on Santa Fe Avenue in Grants and gave chase to a man who jumped out of the car, then pulled a handgun out of his pants and pointed it at Nieto. The man, who turned out to be 27-year-old Mario Serrano of Las Cruces, didn't fire any shots, but ran until stopped by a fence near the No Outlaws Bar, dropped the gun and was placed under arrest, the Beacon said. This time, Nieto was alongside Officer Kevin Dobbs, Grants Police Department detective Amber Marez told the Gallup Independent. Both officers pursued Serrano with guns drawn and eventually subdued the Las Cruces man with a Taser, the Independent said. Serrano originally gave police the false name of Juan Chavez, and it was two days before police figured out his real identity, and the gun he allegedly pointed at Nieto was found to have been stolen in Roswell, Marez told the paper. Also in custody was Serrano's brother, Gilbert Serrano of Albuquerque, who was driving the car that was found to be carrying 60 grams of methamphetamine and more than 60 grams of marijuana and crack cocaine, the Independent said. Gilbert Serrano, 26, is being held at the Cibola County Detention Center facing charges of receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a felon, the Independent and the Beacon reported. Mario Serrano is also jailed on a variety of charges, including trafficking a controlled substance, aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, receiving stolen property, felony possession of a controlled substance, resisting or evading arrest, possession of more than one ounce (but less than eight ounces) of marijuana and concealing his identity, according to the Beacon.
