Two arrested Tuesday, another Wednesday in weekend home invasion.
Joan Vickers, 82, of Portales, was in stable condition Wednesday at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock being treated for injuries, including a broken hip, she suffered in a home invasion on Saturday, the Portales News-Tribune reported. Portales police said in a news release that two men were arrested Tuesday night and a third on Wednesday in connection with the incident, the paper reported. Police said Vickers was awakened by her doorbell ringing around midnight Saturday and by the time she got to the front door, three men had entered her house through a back door, which may have been unlocked because there was no sign of forced entry, the News-Tribune said. Vickers may have suffered her injuries by being kicked, Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said in a news release. Jay Brian Stuart, 20; Preston Blake, 25; and Joe Zertuche, 18, all of Portales, are being held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center, facing multiple felony charges, the News-Tribune said. Stuart and Blake are accused of aggravated battery, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, tampering with evidence and attempted disposal of stolen property, and were being held Wednesday on bonds of $58,000 each, according to the News-Tribune. Zertuche is being held on a $35,000 bond, facing charges of aggravated burglary and conspiracy, the paper said. Police tracked down Stuart and Blake after checking with local jewelry stores and pawn shop where they learned of individuals trying to sell loose diamonds, according to the news release. Berry said police are still following up leads and may be filing charges against other people who may have been involved in attempting to dispose of the stolen goods, the News-Tribune reported.
