Lady Lobos fall short of return to the Pit.
It was a game try, but the University of New Mexico women's basketball team just couldn't overcome the defending national champion Baylor Lady Bears -- who despite losing much of their firepower from last year, seemed to have it all last night -- balanced offense and defense and overpowering rebounding. The cliche may be true that the game was a lot closer than the final score indicated -- 87-67. But then again, maybe not. Now we know what Baylor coach Kim Mulkey-Robinson was doing in the stands Saturday night watching every minute of the Lobos' demolition of favored Florida. She was checking out how her top-flight athletes (including All American Sophia Young) could take advantage of the Lobos' disciplined overachievers. Alas, no trip home for the regional semifinals in Albuquerque (see Rick Wright's story here). But it was a great run.
