Forecasters promise a "complex array of weather conditions" over next 2-3 days.

One look at this morning's multicolored weather map of New Mexico tells the story -- what the National Weather Service calls a "complex array" of conditions ranging from tinder-dry fire danger in the south to a winter weather advisory for the north-central counties.

And for the Albuquerque area, cooler than normal temperatures (a high of 65, four degrees less than the average high for this date), breezy 10 to 15 mph winds increasing to 20-25 mph sustained winds with gusts to 30 mph, and a possibility of showers turning to thunderstorms later today.

The winter weather advisory just posted for the northwest mountains, Chama, Los Alamos, Red River, Taos and Santa Fe in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday promises 1-5 inches of snow for the upper elevations (between 7,000 and 9,000 feet), but the snow is expected to be "showery" in nature, with some melting as the sun peeks through later in the day.

For our area, the fire weather watch is in effect from this afternoon to this evening, with strong winds and low humidities giving way to some precipitation (and some breezes) as the sun goes down.

There's a red flag warning up from noon today to 9 tonight for a broad swath of southern New Mexico and a possibility of wind and blowing dust advisories for later in the day.

It's going to be breezy to windy tonight through Thursday, with temperatures in the low to mid 60s, and quieter weather won't be back in New Mexico until Friday night or Saturday, followed by dry conditions for quite some time, according to the weather service's area forecast discussion
