Former police sergeant pleads innocent to battery charges.

Grants police Sgt. Georgette Chee, 31, resigned March 11 after pleading not guilty to charges of abandonment and/or abuse of a child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two misdemeanor counts of battery against a household member, the Gallup Independent has reported on its Web site.

The charges stem from the early-morning hours of Jan. 23 when, according to court records cited by the Independent, Chee and two of her sisters were drinking and arguing at Chee's home.

One of the sisters had punched through a window and cut her arm and was taken for treatment to Cibola General Hospital, the paper reported.

Chee told State Police, who investigated the incident, that she arrived home from work to find her sisters already drinking and an argument ensued, according to the Independent.

Chee ended up hitting both sisters, one sister told police, but Chee told investigators she was defending herself, the paper reported.

The investigating officer said Chee had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath, watery eyes and slurred speech following the incident, according to the Independent.

State Police placed Chee under arrest, and the Grants Police Department has conducted its own internal investigation, the paper said.

A preliminary hearing for Chee will be held April 18.
