Legal Aid staff attorney in Las Cruces fired from job, arrested and jailed.

Ismael Alvarez, 70, was fired Monday from his job as staff attorney with the Las Cruces office of New Mexico Legal Aid after supervisors last week allegedly found pornographic materials on one of his office computers and on several CD-ROMs, the Las Cruces Sun-News is reporting.

Alvarez was arrested and jailed at the Dona Ana County Detention Center,  and was charged this morning with four counts of sexual exploitation of children, fourth-degree felonies each carrying 18 months in prison, the Sun-News reported.

"We are deeply troubled by this incident," Legal Aid Litigation Director Dorene Kuffer said in a statement. "The actions and behavior of Mr. Alvarez is not reflective (of) our organization or the people in it."

Court documents show that Kuffer alerted the FBI after pornographic materials, some of which apparently depicted minors, allegedly turned up on Alvarez's computer, the Sun-News reported.

Kuffer ordered the search after suspicions were raised that Alvarez's job performance was being affected by his spending time on the Internet, according to a criminal complaint.

Pictures found on the computer alleged included pictures of a girl who appeared to be under 12 years of age, the complaint said.

A search of Alvarez's office, his car and his home turned up hundreds of CD-ROMs with pornographic images, according to the complaint.
