Winter has arrived, but it's moving fast.
Light snowfall has arrived in Albuquerque at this hour, getting a little heavier as you go up into the Heights and in the East Mountains. It's a fast-moving storm that is expected to move through New Mexico during the day and be gone by tonight. A winter storm warning is in effect till 2 p.m. for Rio Arriba County, northwest Sandoval County and parts of San Juan and McKinley counties with 3-5-inch accumulations below 7,500 feet, 6-9 inches at higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service. For the western counties, dipping down into Catron and Socorro counties, there's a snow advisory in effect until 11 a.m., with most of the heavy accumulating snow already on the ground and a mix of rain and snow expected while the advisory is up, the weather service says. In the Albuquerque metro area and north to Taos and Raton, south to Socorro and east along the Interstate 40 corridor to the state line, there's a winter weather advisory in effect until 11 this morning. That means a mix of rain and snow, with possible accumulations of 1 to 3 inches of snow. It all means that drivers are warned to exercise caution, and in the north/northwest where there's a winter storm warning, the weather service discourages any unnecessary travel.
