Compromise would keep nine-hole course and allow future development.
An advisory board unveiled a compromise plan Sunday that would keep the University of New Mexico's north golf course running and still allow for development, KRQE News 13 reported Sunday night. Members of the board, which consists of neighbors who live near the course and UNM officials, unveiled a map on Sunday that showed the nine-hole golf course would stay as it is but the adjacent land, which is wooded and includes jogging trails, could be subject to future development, according to a KOAT-TV report. Sara Koplik, president of the North Campus Neighborhood Association and chair of the advisory board, said the compromise took months to reach and told News 13 she is confident it was the best solution. "We felt that this would be a way for all sides to benefit," Koplik told KRQE. "This would be a win for the university, for the students and the community." UNM President David Schmidly told residents last November that the university planned to build a retirement community on the golf course, but advisory board members told News 13 those plans were postponed for now. The advisory board will present its plan to the UNM Board of Regents later this month, and it will be up to the regents to accept the plan or renew negotiations, according to KOAT-TV's report.
