ExpressJet flight to Austin returned safely to Sunport after colliding with flock.
A nonstop flight from the Albuquerque International Sunport to Austin came to a harrowing end, when a 50-passenger ExpressJet took off at 7:30 p.m. and just a few minutes into the flight ran into a high-flying flock of geese, Sunport spokesman Daniel Jiron told ABQjournal.com. The plane and "multiple geese" crossed paths at approximately 15,000 feet, said Jiron, who added, "I didn't know geese flew that high." The plane's left wing and left engine were dented, and the pilot had to shut down the engine, but he turned the jet around and made an emergency landing back at the Sunport, Jiron said. The landing was without incident, and no one was hurt, Jiron told us. The plane landed about 45 minutes after it took off, KOB-TV reported. According to KRQE News 13, the plane is being checked out, and when it's safe to fly again, the plane will be flown to ExpressJet's corporate headquarters in Houston.
