Plumes of black smoke may be visible in ABQ from now through May 19

Sandia National Laboratories will be conducting a series of controlled fire experiments from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through May 19 at the labs' indoor Thermal Test Complex on Kirtland Air Force Base, according to a Sandia news release.

A plume of black smoke coming from the southwest side of the base may be visible from Albuquerque during the tests, which will last approximately 60 minutes each, the release said.

The tests of a variety of liquid fuels may be conducted three times a day, according to the release.

The Thermal Test Complex is designed specifically for burning fuels in steel pans in an indoor facility, and there is virtually no danger of the fire spreading, the release said.

Test dates and times are subject to change depending on weather conditions, according to the release.
