Police still looking for others believed involved in monthslong robbery spree.

Robbery detectives just confirmed to the Albuquerque Journal's T.J. Wilham that they have captured two of the so-called "backpack bandits."

The men were booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center at 5 a.m. today and have been charged in connection with one of the 25 robberies that police believe a group of men committed in a two-month period. Detectives say more charges are likely.

They are still looking for two others they believe were involved in the holdups.

Police Chief Ray Schultz is planning an afternoon news conference to announce the arrests. Read ABQjournal.com and tommorow's Journal for more on this developing story.

Breaking at 8:47a.m.: 'Backpack Bandits' May Be in Custody: APD raid on NW ABQ apartment Tuesday evening may have cracked robbery ring.

Albuquerque raided a Northwest Albuquerque apartment complex Tuesday, nabbing three men and a woman who may be part of the notorious "Backpack Bandits" ring that has plagued Albuquerque businesses for several months, 770 KKOB Radio and KRQE News 13 are reporting.

APD robbery detectives obtained a search warrant and SWAT officers and a K-9 unit swarmed an apartment at Tucson and Yucca NW just after 7 p.m. Tuesday, arresting four people who may be part of the armed-robbery gang that has held up at least 25 businesses since early February, KKOB reported.

The names of the suspects haven't been released yet, but police told News 13 that the people arrested matched descriptions of the robbers who have targeted restaurants, video game stores and adult bookstores, wearing masks, hats and bandanas and carrying guns.

Here's what the Albuquerque Journal's T.J. Wilham wrote about the gang late last month.

APD is expected to hold a news conference this morning with more information on the arrests, KKOB reported.
