Roman Aranda III struck while bicycling in Texas.
Mesilla residents this week are mourning the loss of Roman Aranda III, 46, who was killed Sunday near Brenham, Texas, when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a 2005 Ford Escape driven by LaToya Jackson of Hempstead, Texas, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported today on its Web site. Aranda, who was mayor of Mesilla from 1995 to 1998 after serving as a village trustee from 1991 to 1995, had been living in Brenham, northwest of Houston, since 2000, the paper reported. A former colleague at El Paso Corp., where Aranda worked for 24 years, said Aranda had been training for a major fund-raising bicycle race in the Houston area, the Sun-News reported. "He was training to help raise money for people suffering from multiple sclerosis. That's the kind of man he was," Joe Hollier, senior media analyst for the El Paso Corp., told the Sun-News. According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, Jackson apparently lost control of her vehicle and crashed into Aranda who was bicycling on the opposite side of the road, the Sun-News reported. Funeral arrangements were pending, but Aranda is expected to be buried in Mesilla, the paper reported. For a look at Aranda's legacy, go to the Sun-News Web site at www.lcsun-news.com.
