Highway closed both ways between Moriarty and Tucumcari.

New Mexico State Police shut down Interstate 40 between Moriarty and Santa Rosa in both directions around 11 a.m. due to snowy, wintry weather and hazardous driving conditions, and recently extended the closure from Santa Rosa to Tucumcari in both directions, said State Police Lt. Jimmy Glascock.

Glascock said traffic was getting so congested in Santa Rosa it was decided to stop people further on up the interstate at Tucumcari.

The worst of the weather -- and the traffic congestion -- was in an area around and east of Clines Corners, Glascock.

Numerous accidents were reported in the area this morning, Glascock said.

Glascock said it was difficult to estimate how long that portion of I-40 would remain closed, saying it depends on how quickly the fairly fast-moving weather system moves out of the state.
