Taos police arrest man accused of driving the wrong way, hitting couple's car.

Gary Montoya, 39, was arrested Wednesday night after trying to flee the scene of an accident by climbing up a tree, The Taos News reported.

Taos traffic officer David Weaver told the News that Montoya was driving in the wrong lane Paseo del Pueblo Sur around 8 p.m. Wednesday when he struck a car coming the other way, sending a passenger in the other car to Holy Cross Hospital with broken ribs.

"(Montoya) tried to drive away from the scene, but instead he parked in a lot and crawled out of (his) Jeep and hid in a tree," Weaver said.

Montoya is currently facing a charge of DWI, fourth offense or greater, but Weaver told the paper more charges are likely to be filed pending an investigation.
