ABQ's average price per gallon of unleaded somewhat lower at $3.392 today.

Retail gas prices hit a record $3.50 for a gallon of regular unleaded today, while crude oil prices also set a new record, spiking above $117 a barrel following an attack on a Japanese oil tanker in the Middle East, The Associated Press is reporting.

The AP also reports that diesel prices at the pump jumped to a record $4.20 a gallon nationally, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

Prices are expected to keep climbing, following the lead of crude oil prices which have set new records for six trading sessions in a row, according to the AP.

Nationally, retail gas prices jumped more than a nickel over the weekend and are up 23 percent from a year ago, the AP reported.

The nation's highest prices are in California, where a gallon of regular unleaded is averaging $3.86 a gallon, and the lowest are reported in New Jersey, the AP said.

Here in Albuquerque, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded hit $3.392, up just shy of two cents from Sunday's average of $3.376, according to AlbuquerqueGasPrices.com.

A year ago, according to the Web site, we were paying $2.865 a gallon, slightly higher than the national average.

The cheapest places in town, AlbuquerqueGasPrices.com reports, are the Sam's Club, 1421 Renaissance Blvd. and Culture NE, and Love's at Interstate 40 and 6th St. NW, at $3.25 a gallon. Right behind, is Sam's Club at 300 Eubank Blvd. and Chico Road NE.
