Dogs poisoned in Radium Springs; monkeys, lemurs fed chiles at Clovis zoo.

At least five dogs have died of poisoning in Radium Springs, and Dona Ana County sheriff's investigators are looking into the possibility that more pets may have been poisoned, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Sheriff's investigator Bo Nevarez told the Sun-News that the deaths were reported in early April, but investigators believe that animals other than dogs may be targeted in the attacks.

Nevarez urged anyone with information about the poisonings to call the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office at (575) 525-1911.

Meanwhile, the Clovis News Journal reported that a man and two juveniles were charged last Friday with misdemeanor animal cruelty for allegedly feeding hot peppers to spider monkeys and ring-tailed lemurs at the Hillcrest Park Zoo in Clovis.

The charges stem from a March 30 incident where two families were detained by zoo officials after they discovered the animals had been given chiles to eat, the News Journal reported.

The animals, who got hot oils on their hands and burns to their eyes, have since recovered, Clovis Police Capt. Patrick Whitney told the News Journal.

The 40-year-old man could get up to 364 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000, while the 9- and 15-year-old juveniles will be referred to juvenile probation and parole, Whitney told the paper.
