UTEP's Stefon Jackson has until Friday to decide whether he will turn pro.
The late Hunter S. Thompson once famously said, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Now, we're not saying anything about the University of Texas-El Paso's star guard Stefon Jackson, but there's definitely something strange about the company he keeps. Anyway, Jackson -- who was seventh in the nation in scoring last year and Conference USA scoring leader -- has until Friday to make up his mind whether he will declare for the NBA Draft or return for his senior year at UTEP, according to the El Paso Times. Jackson told the Times last month he hadn't made a decision yet on whether to go pro or return for his senior year. The 21-year-old Jackson landed in some legal hot water on April 15, when he was arrested for allegedly lying to sheriff's deputies over the whereabouts of his cousin Willie Harden Jr., who was wanted in Philadelphia for attempted murder, the Times reported. Harden was arrested in El Paso. Another fugitive, 20-year-old Lamar Reid, who was wanted for murder in Philadelphia, was found hiding in Jackson's apartment when Jackson was placed under arrest, according to earlier reports. But Jackson's attorney, Dolph Quijano, has said his client did not break the law, the Times reported. In order for Jackson's actions to be considered a felony, the evidence must show that he knew his cousin was a fugitive from justice and that he was being sought on a felony warrant, the paper said. Jackson, who was released on bond within hours of being arrested, is facing a third-degree felony charge, punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, the Times reported.
