From CNNMoney.com, another Top 10 list we'd rather not be part of.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that Albuquerque had the seventh highest rate of auto theft per capita among the nation's metropolitan areas in 2007, according to CNNMoney.com (thanks to e-mailer William Sadler for the tip).

Modesto, Calif., led the list, followed by Las Vegas/Paradise, Nev.; San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos, Calif.; Stockton, Calif.; San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont, Calif.; and Laredo, Texas, according to the report.

Following Albuquerque in rounding out the top 10 were Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale, Ariz.; Yakima, Wash.; and Tucson, the report said.

Western states dominated the top spots in auto theft rates, the NICB reported.

And most of the metro areas with high theft rates are near the nation's border with Mexico, a fact that can make it tricky for authorities to recover stolen vehicles, CNNMoney.com reported.

The rankings were based on full-year figures from the National Crime Information Center and the rate is determined by the number of vehicle thefts per 100,000 inhabitants, using 2007 US. Census Population Estimates.
