And what are the odds that two giants of world literature would die on the same day?

Tradition has it that William Shakespeare was born on this day in 1564, and coincidentally enough, it was on the same day 52 years later that the Bard of Avon shuffled off this mortal coil.

And if that isn't strange enough, it was also on April 23, 1616, that the last great giant of Spanish literature -- Miguel de Cervantes -- died in Madrid.

But those were the days before our obsessive attention to historical detail, and so little is known anyway about the man we call Shakespeare (was he really Sir Francis Bacon?), could these convergences could be mere literary wishful thinking?

One thing we do know is that another giant (literally) of literature, filmmaking and political polemic was born on this day in 1954. Michael Moore ("Canadian Bacon," "Fahrenheit 911," "Sicko") turns 54 today.
