Las Cruces woman, 27, in jail, charged with negligent child abuse.

Krystal Medina, 27, of Las Cruces was being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash-only bond after being charged with negligent child abuse, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Medina was arrested Monday after drug tests on her 2-month-old son came back positive for "high levels of cocaine," according to a Las Cruces Police Department news release.

Medina allegedly admitted to police that she often smoked marijuana and would leave her son in the care of her relatives, often for days at a time, but she denied she would "party" around her son, the Sun-News reported.

But according to court records, she also told police that if her son were tested he would probably come back positive for marijuana, the paper said.

The baby has been placed in protective custody with the state Children, Youth and Families Department, according to the Sun-News.
