Boy, 9, accused of trying to stab a 7-year-old neighbor with a steak knife.

Clovis police are investigating a Monday incident in which a 9-year-old boy allegedly stabbed a 7-year-old neighbor with a steak knife while his 11-year-old sister held the victim down, the Clovis News Journal reported.

The victim's wounds were superficial and were treated at home by her mother, police Capt. Patrick Whitney told the News Journal.

"It was a steak knife, but luckily it wasn't applied with very much force," Whitney told the paper.

The children all live in the same apartment complex, and, according to Whitney the girl who was stabbed on the leg had used a racial epithet towards the boy, the News Journal said.

"... That's what supposedly caused it, (but) you can't stab someone if they call you a bad name," Whitney told the paper.

By law, children age 11 and under can't be arrested, but the case has been referred to juvenile authorities, the News Journal said.

"It is a felony aggravated battery because that is a deadly weapon. There isn't anything deadlier than a steak knife. It is designed to cut flesh (and meat)," Whitney told the News Journal, adding that officers "are not allowed to take them into custody, period. For any reason."
