Mendoza likely surprised burglar who left a mess at his home but didn't take anything.
Gallup Mayor Harry Mendoza told McKinley County sheriff's deputies that someone broke into his home on Lucero Lane, near N.M. 602, south of Gallup Friday evening but left without taking anything, the Gallup Independent reported. Sheriff's investigator Matt Hughbanks told the Independent that Mendoza likely surprised the intruder or intruders when he and his wife arrived home around 8 p.m. Friday. The would-be burglar had rifled through cabinets, closets and dresser drawers but apparently was surprised by the mayor's arrival, the Independent said. Other than the mess, Hughbanks told the paper, "it was pretty gentle." Deputies found a pair of shoe prints leading from the residence to nearby N.M. 602, but were unable to locate any suspects, the Independent said.
