"Blue collar police chief" takes over in city of 1,000 on New Mexico-Texas state line.
Former Curry County Undersheriff Doug Bowman was hired this week as chief of police in Texico, a city of 1,000 just inside the New Mexico-Texas state line, the Clovis News Journal reported. "He'll be a blue collar police chief," Texico personnel director Doug Scioli told the News Journal. "He'll be expected to do everything that everybody else (in the department) has to do." Bowman was among seven applicants for the position and will be paid $35,000 a year, Scioli said. Texico doesn't have a high crime rate, but there is plenty of traffic to deal with along U.S. 60/70/84, Scioli told the News Journal. Bowman, who lost a bid to become Curry County sheriff in 2006, will replace John Mares, who quit the Texico chief's job in March to run for De Baca County sheriff, the paper reported. "I have just been wanting to get back in law enforcement and this was a good opportunity for me, and I just felt it would be a good fit," said Bowman, who will oversee two officers in Texico, the News Journal reported.
