Hugh Dangler to replace John Bigelow, who is stepping down in late June.

Hugh Dangler, currently the district public defender for north-central New Mexico, will replace Chief Public Defender John Bigelow, who is stepping down to pursue other interests, the Governor's Office said today in a news release.

Dangler, who holds a law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law and a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, has been general counsel at the state Regulation and Licensing Department and has served as training director as well as a trial and appellate attorney at the Public Defender's Office, the release said.

"I am honored by this opportunity Governor Richardson has given me," Dangler said in the release. "I look forward to continuing the work and many improvements that have occurred under John Bigelow and going forward with Richardson Administration policies."

Bigelow has been chief public defender since January 2003 and served in the same post from 1978 to 1982.  He also has served as deputy attorney general in New Mexico, chief of the trial division in the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General and was special assistant attorney general in selected civil cases for New Mexico and Massachusetts, the release said.

Bigelow, who will continue to serve as chair of Gov. Bill Richardson's Prison Reform Task Force, said in the release that he was leaving because he wants to "catch up on some travel and projects that I've been putting off."
