Former Mesilla mayor was killed bicycling in Texas.
Funeral services for Roman Aranda III, 46, mayor of Mesilla from 1995 to 1998, will be held at 10 this morning at San Albino Catholic Church on Mesilla Plaza, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News. Aranda was killed Sunday near Brenham, Texas, while riding his bicycle in training for a Houston-area bicycle race to raise money to fight multiple sclerosis, the paper reported. Aranda is survived by his wife, Natalie, and a son, Roman Aranda IV, as well as his parents, Roman Aranda Jr. and Frances Aranda of Mesilla; a sister, Gloria Valencia; four brothers, Gilbert, Anthony, Robert and Gabriel Aranda; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. The Sun-News also reports that a reception in Aranda's honor will be held from noon to 5 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall in Tortugas.
