Valencia Co. sheriff says Belen-area father, 47, shot 25-year-old son, then himself.

Valencia County sheriff's detectives are still investigating what led up to a shooting last Friday night that has left a Belen-area man and his son hospitalized, the Valencia County News-Bulletin reported this week.

Daniel Tavaschi, 47, suffered a single gunshot wound to his chest, and his 25-year-old son, Daniel Tavaschi Jr., received multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, and both men were transported to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where both were listed in serious condition, the News-Bulletin reported.

Deputies responded to a mobile home on Martha Jean Drive around 8 p.m. Friday after neighbors reported hearing shots fired  and found both men lying in the hallway of the home, alive but unconscious, the paper said.

"We found two subjects, one with multiple gunshots, and the other was a self-inflicted gunshot," Sheriff Rene Rivera told the News-Bulletin. "It appears that the father shot the son and then shot himself."

Although an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing, Rivera said, "It appears they were fighting over tools," the paper reported.

Rivera said there had been incidents at that house before, the News-Bulletin said.

Charges are pending the completion of the investigation, the sheriff said.
