Los Lunas High School sent its nearly 1,700 students home for the day this morning because of a gas leak from somewhere east of the school, Los Lunas schools spokeswoman Rochelle Chavez told ABQjournal.com.

Students showing up for their first-period classes were asked to stay inside their classrooms after reports of a gasoline or propane odor alerted officials to the possibility of a gas leak at school, Chavez said.

Fire officials found no evidence of a leak at the school, but around 9:50 a.m., high school Principal Claudia Krause-Johnson made a "calm, cool" announcement that the school would be evacuated, Chavez told us.

Students were evacuated by sections to a soccer field north of the high school, and from there were sent home in stages, Chavez said.

Those who rode buses were released first, students who had driven to school next and finally those students who were being picked up by parents, she told us.

The evacuation was done by 10:45 a.m., she said.

The source of the gas leak was reported to be from a business to the east of the high school, according to News 13.
