Woman's 2-year-old son was found wandering in snow wearing only a diaper.
Crystal Rios, 22, who was arrested in January after her 2-year-old son was found wandering in the snow near a Farmington motel, pleaded guilty this week to a charge of third-degree child abuse, the Farmington Daily Times reported. Police found the child and the boy's 8-month-old sister had suffered bite marks, one of the children had an untreated broken arm, the Daily Times said. Prosecutors said that while Rios faces up to three years in prison, they likely won't seek jail time because the woman has no criminal history and was not directly responsible for the injuries, the paper said. But abuse charges are pending against the woman's former boyfriend, 21-year-old Francisco Romero, who is accused of biting the children and faces up to six years in prison, the Daily Times said. "I don't think there's any question that she's not the one that inflicted the harm," said the woman's attorney, Terry Walker. State District Judge Thomas Hynes on Monday released the woman from jail so she could find a job before her sentencing takes place on June 2, the Daily Times said. The children are in the care of grandparents in California and are not in state custody, Rios' attorney told the Daily Times.
