Furniture truck sets off explosives alarm, forcing gate closures, school lockdown.

A furniture delivery truck set off a bomb detecting device as it passed through a Kirtland Air Force Base gate around 11:30 a.m. today, causing Kirtland Elementary School to go on lockdown and the closure of the Carlisle and Kirtland Drive gates, according to reports on KOB-TV, KOAT-TV and KRQE News 13.

Police also shut down the intersection of Gibson and Girard SE until the all-clear was sounded around 12:15 p.m., and the truck was allowed through the gate, according to Eyewitness News 4.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Web site said the Kirtland Elementary School lockdown was lifted around noon.

There is no word as to why the bomb detection device, one of the new security features at the base, was triggered by the truck, KOB reported.
