Transuranic waste again going to Carlsbad facility after two-week delay.
Shipments of transuranic waste have resumed to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad following a two-week suspension due to a waterline break outside the plant, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported. On April 23, WIPP personnel discovered a leak in a 6-inch-diameter water line that provides water to the waste handling building's fire suppression system, the Current-Argus reported. Shipments, other than those already staged or en route to WIPP, were held at generator sites until being resumed last Wednesday, the paper said. In the meantime, fire protection specialists at WIPP set up a bypass to provide an alternate water source to the waste handling building, the Current-Argus said. With the bypass and a response plan in place, Department of Energy headquarters approved a request to resume shipments on May 7, the paper reported.
