11:15am UPDATE: The National Weather Service has just posted this special weather statement, saying two storm systems -- including the low pressure system currently crossing Arizona -- will bring major weather changes to New Mexico through at least the end of the week.

We should see cooler temperatures, widespread rain and even snow in the higher elevations, as well as strong east winds across the Rio Grande and Tularosa valleys, the weather service said. 

Albuquerque city meteorologist Jeff Stonesifer mentioned in his e-mailed forecast this morning that it was snowing in Flagstaff and there's a light rain in Prescott, Ariz.

Hey, this is May! But we checked the weather data for Flagstaff, and sure enough there's a snow advisory in effect until noon with moderate to heavy snow showers expected along the western Mogollon Rim.

The National Weather Service said 2 to 3 inches of snow had fallen on Flagstaff by 5 a.m. and expected another 1 to 3 inches before it was done.

That low pressure system crossing Arizona today is expected to hit southern New Mexico by tonight and Wednesday, and while snow isn't being forecast for New Mexico, the system should crank up enough humidity for some precipitation actually to hit the ground, Stonesifer said in his report.

There's a second low pressure system right on the heels of the first, which may bring us our best chance for rain in Albuquerque by Wednesday and then again on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, Stonesifer said.

The National Weather Service's five-day outlook for the Albuquerque area is calling for a 10 percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms after noon, increasing to 20 percent chance tonight, a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday.

From there, we've got a 40 percent chance of showers Thursday night, with chances diminishing through Friday night, the weather service said.
