Severe thunderstorm warning issued for northern Lea County till 1 p.m.

About a half an hour ago, National Weather Service meteorologists detected a severe thunderstorm about 20 miles west of Lovington, moving east at about 18 mph, that was capable of producing nickel-sized hail with damaging winds blowing in excess of 60 mph.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect around McDonald and Tatum until 1 p.m., the weather service said.

A tornado watch is in effect for all of Lea County and several west Texas counties until 6 p.m. MDT, the weather service said.

The weather service also is tracking a strong thunderstorm moving over southernmost Roosevelt County, which is capable of producing winds of up to 50 mph and hail up to a half-inch in diameter, spotted just before noon about 5 miles southeast of Milnesand and moving east at about 15 mph.
