The House Armed Services committee voted this morning not to fund the Reliable Replacement Warhead.
I haven't seen the full bill yet. The press release is here. This is not yet dispositive, but it's a clear indication that the Bush Administration and the nuclear weapons labs (primarily Livermore here) will not get the money in Fiscal Year 2009 to continue design work on the weapon. The labs and the National Nuclear Security Administration have been pushing this thing hard, arguing that a new type of lower-cost, easier to maintain warhead (think VW bug) is needed to replace the Cold War Ferraris now in the arsenal. That argument is clearly not selling among members of Congress. (h/t the Friends Committee on National Legislation, which has been following this issue, for the tip)
