A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured Saturday evening when he was attacked by what might have been  a mountain lion while walking with his family in the Sandia Mountains, sheriff’s officials reported.

The boy was walking with his family along the Balsam Glade Nature Trail about 7:30 p.m. when he was attacked. A helicopter flew the boy from the Sandia Ski Area to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he is listed in serious but stable condition.

State Game and Fish officials said Sunday afternoon that they could find no traces of a mountain lion in the area after a search by a tracker and dogs. They believe the animal could be a small bear or a bobcat. Officials said they would show pictures of animals to the child and his parents at the hospital in hopes of identifying what kind of animal attacked him.
