Driver in crash that killed teammate accused of DWI.

Ryan Bruns, 23, of Vacaville, Calif., has been charged with driving while intoxicated in connection with an early Sunday morning crash on Interstate 25 near Bernalillo that killed a teammate and injured another teammate, the Las Vegas Optic reported on its Web site.

Killed in the crash was Raul Perez, a junior from the Los Angeles area who was a catcher on the NMHU baseball team, who was thrown from the 2003 Chevrolet pickup that veered onto the median of northbound I-25, according to a story that appeared in the Journal North edition earlier this week.

Injured was Miguel Gomez, who also was ejected from the truck.

The three had played last Friday and Saturday in a four-game sweep of visiting Colorado Christian University.

Additional charges could be filed against Bruns once blood test results are in, State Police Lt. Juan Martinez told the Optic.

Sunday's crash was the second in a 10-day span to claim the life of a Highlands student-athlete, the Journal reported.

Ashleigh Smith, a graduate student in education and a cross-country standout, was killed in a March 17 crash on I-25 about 15 miles south of Las Vegas, the Journal reported.
