Volunteers report illegal group just  half-hour on the job.

While the spotlight was on the main body of Minuteman Civil Defense Corps as it began its second year of patrols in Arizona Saturday, New Mexico's Minuteman volunteers took just 30 minutes to spot a group of illegal immigrants trying to cross over from Mexico, according to a story by The Associated Press in the Deming Headlight.

Bob Wright of Eunice, director of the New Mexico group, said 27 volunteers had just begun their patrols around sundown Saturday when they spotted a group of seven illegals crossing the border near Columbus and reported the group to the Border Patrol, the AP reported.

"We hadn't been on the line more than 30 minutes when we spotted our first group of seven," Wright told AP by cell phone. "The Border Patrol is after them. We're just watching it happen here in front of us."

Wright said the group will be deployed along New Mexico's 180-mile stretch of border with Mexico during the month of April and will operate mostly near Columbus, but he declined to disclose the exact location.

Volunteers in Wright's group are mostly from New Mexico and Colorado, with one who traveled from Fort Wayne, Ind., to participate, according to the AP report.
