El Paso man convicted of assault leading to bridge guard's fatal heart attack.

Pablo Aragon, 29, of El Paso, was found guilty by a U.S. District Court jury of assault charges in the New Year's Day beating of 58-year-old Cruz Vite, a security guard at the Paso del Norte bridge, who later died of a heart attack, the El Paso Times reported.

Aragon was convicted of assault causing serious bodily injury and assault causing bodily injury and faces anywhere from 5 to 99 years in prison and a a fine of up to $10,000, the Times reported.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Aragon got into a confrontation with Vite, who was manning the pedestrian toll booth on the U.S. side of the downtown El Paso bridge, and struck Vite on the left side of his head, causing a cut near his eye, the paper said.

The county medical examiner determined that Vite, who had a pre-existing medical condition, died of a heart attack triggered by the assault, the Times reported.

Aragon will be sentenced on Aug. 25 by U.S. District Judge David Briones.
