UNM scientist to discuss impacts in free lecture next week.
David Gutzler, who teaches and researches global and regional climate change at the University of New Mexico, will speak on "Climate Change: What's in Store for New Mexico?" from 8-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, 2401 12th N.W. in Albuquerque. According to a release from the state Environment Department, which is hosting the lecture, scientists believe a warmer New Mexico could mean a reduction in water supplies; shorter, warmer and rainier winters; premature snowmelts; more water loss through evaporation; more intense wildfires; and more frequent and extreme weather events, such as drought and floods. The lecture and question-and-answer session will be preceded by an update on Gov. Bill Richardson's Climate Change Initiative from 7-8 p.m. The governor's initiative involves a thorough study of ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, sets tough emission reduction goals and has created a New Mexico Climate Change Advisory Group which includes representatives of industry, environmental and some governmental groups.
