Missile Range Employee saw what he thinks was a meteor

While the official cause of the Dripping Springs fire near Las Cruces is yet undetermined,  J.O. Johnson, a White Sands Missile Range employee, has a possible explanation — a meteor strike.

He says he witnessed what he believes  was an impact Friday evening before the fire was reported Saturday.

He was crossing the San Augustine Pass coming back into Las Cruces when he saw a "very brilliant, large white object with green tints" that came down at a sharp angle, reports the Las Cruces Sun-News

"It came down north to south and appeared to strike near Dripping Springs and Soledad Canyon area," he said. "All I thought was "that's neat.' Then (Saturday) afternoon, when they started talking about a fire out there, it led me to question whether the heat caused a yucca to smolder and start the fire," he told the newspaper.
