A South Valley grandmother was sentenced to nearly 100 years in prison for her conviction on sexual molesting her granddaughter, all but assuring that Lovato will die behind bars. Mary Esther Lovato, 58, received 97 1/2 years -- the maximum sentence -- Friday for the 12 molestation charges she was convicted of in March. Lovato was arrested in April 2005 on 12 charges, including three counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor. The arrest came after the girl, then 7, disclosed that Lovato had molested her for years when she came to visit the home Lovato shared with her sister in the 4100 block of Wallace Southwest. Lovato had repeatedly refused to accept a plea agreement that would have made her a free woman but one who would have had to register as a sex offender and served up to 20 years of probation. Instead, the woman known as “Grandma Esther” chose to go to trial to prove her innocence.
