Albuquerque school officials extend shutdown another day.

Continuing cleanup of a flooded basement in the main building at Highland High School in SE Albuquerque has forced the cancellation of classes for at least one more day, said APS spokeswoman Lauran Morrison.

However, outdoor after-school activities will take place as scheduled, Morrison said.

7:50am -- Highland H.S. Closed Today: Flooding has shut down the southeast Albuquerque school, APS officials report.

Classes for approximately 1,650 students at Highland High School were canceled today when it was discovered that a pipe or boiler release valve in the basement broke over the weekend, filling the basement with some three feet of water, APS officials said.

Power is out to the main building and gymnasium, and phone and computer service is shut off to the entire campus, said APS spokeswoman Lauran Morrison.

The exact location and cause of the break won't be known until the water is removed from the basement, said Morrison.

No decision has been made yet on whether the school will be ready to reopen tomorrow, she said.
