Passenger boardings on Albuquerque’s buses topped 10 million over the last year -- a record high, the city announced Wednesday.

Mayor Martin Chávez said people are often trying the bus system to cope with high gasoline prices, then deciding to stick with it. The city has new buses and shelters to make the experience more rider-friendly, he said.

The city expects 10.4 million passenger boardings for the fiscal year that ends Monday. That would be an 11 percent increase over the previous fiscal year.

A boarding is recorded each time a person gets on a bus. A rider who transfers among several buses, then, would count as more than one boarding.
