The elderly woman killed in a house fire yesterday afternoon near 2nd and El Pueblo NW has been identified as 88-year-old Rosauria Aragon, officials said.

Aragon, who friends and family said lived with her sister, was alone inside the home at 207 Wayne NW when flames erupted around 4 p.m.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire and exactly how Aragon died.

But Bernalillo County Fire Chief John Garcia said this morning that the fire “was more accidental than anything else.”

“It’s not official yet,” he said, “but it looks like it was probably a kitchen fire.

Specifically, Garcia told ABQJournal.com, investigators are looking at whether the blaze started at Aragon’s stove, which was to be removed and examined Friday.

Smoke inhalation likely took Aragon’s life, Garcia said. A precise cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
