But what did the Gov mean when he told ABC News he'd help 'in principle'?
Gov. Bill Richardson laid out six national security/foreign policy challenges at a meeting of the Democratic Leadership Council in Chicago on Sunday, continuing to burnish his credentials to become Secretary of State in an Obama administration. But his diplomatic skills also were on display when he told ABC News following the centrist group's annual meeting that was offering to help retire Sen. Hillary Clinton's significant campaign debt, according to ABC's "Political Radar" blog. "We've been asked to help. So in principle we are going to help," Richardson told ABC News. "I think the party needs to come together." The ABC News blog made much of Richardson's generosity in offering to help the Clinton campaign -- especially after being called "Judas" by Clinton ally James Carville, when the New Mexico governor, a former Democratic presidential candidate himself, threw his support to Barack Obama. But "in principle"? Does that mean he thinks it's a fine idea, but isn't exactly pulling out his checkbook? Or will any contribution to Clinton have to wait until Richardson retires his own, somewhat more modest, campaign debt, which, The Associated Press reported over the weekend, was listed at $285,419 as of late May?
